A roundup of BBC activity for National Album Day

Our official media partner BBC will be celebrating National Album Day across Television, Radio and Online during the week lead up and on the day itself.

TELEVISION

BBC Four will be reflecting the theme of Women in Music on Friday 15th October, with Billie: In Search of Billie Holiday at 9:30pm, Jazz Divas Gold at 10:30pm, and Radio 2 In Concert: Emeli Sandé at midnight.

BBC Two will be broadcasting music documentaries on Saturday 16th October including Nina Simone & Me, hosted by NAD ambassador Laura Mvula, at 11:40pm, and Paloma Faith: As I Am at 00:10am.

 

ONLINE

BBC iPlayer have put together a collection of female-led music documentaries and performances, called Women In Music: National Album Day, which will be promoted on the Music page throughout the week starting Monday 11th October.

RADIO - BBC RADIO 2

BBC Radio 2 will be marking National Album Day with an all-female playlist – from 6am-midnight they will exclusively be playing tracks by women. All their programmes that day will be reflecting the event, and Jo Whiley will be hosting a special countdown of The Official All-Time Female Artists Album Chart at 1pm. Trails for National Album Day will be running on the station from Sunday 10th October.

One Hit Wonders with OJ Borg – Monday 11th Oct, 2:30am-3am

This week is a One Hit Wonder Women special, with 4 Non Blondes, Zoe, Mary Mary and more. It’s all part of National Album Day, which takes place on Saturday 16th October 2021 and is themed Women In Music. There’s brilliant songs from female artists, plus a chat with Canadian singer Alannah Myles. She tells the story of her huge global hit 'Black Velvet'.

Jo Whiley – Wednesday 13th Oct, 7:30pm-9pm

NAD ambassador Joy Crookes plays a Sofa Session for Jo, including music from her debut album, Skin, which is out on October 15th.

Sound of the 60s – Saturday 16th Oct, 6am-8am

Tony B presents two hours of the best music from the 1960s, featuring special tracks from Dionne Warwick, Cher and many more to mark this year’s National Album Day.

Dermot O’Leary – Saturday 16th Oct, 8am-10am

Emeli Sandé joins Dermot for National Album Day. Emeli Sandé has won 4 Brits Awards, 3 Mobo Awards, 2 Ivor Novello Awards and two chart topping albums. She is back with her new single Family this Autumn.

Claudia Winkleman – Saturday 16th Oct, 10am-1pm

Claudia has guests including NAD ambassador Sharleen Spiteri in celebration of National Album Day.

The Official All-Time Female Artists Album Chart – Saturday 16th Oct, 1pm-3pm

To celebrate National Album Day, Jo Whiley counts down the 30 best-selling albums by women (based on UK sales and downloads), as compiled by the Official Charts Company. Expect to hear the biggest tracks from across the decades from the most popular women in pop.

Rylan – Saturday 16th Oct, 3pm-6pm

The original line up of girl band Sugababes speak to Rylan for National Album Day. Plus film and TV quiz ‘Couch Potatos’, actress Sally Lindsay, and mummy Linda will be catching up and sharing her dinner recipes.

The Rock Show with Johnnie Walker – Saturday 16th Oct, 8pm-9pm

Mollie Marriott picks her Rock God for this 'women in rock' special, to help celebrate this year's National Album Day.

Shaggy’s Reggae Hotspots – Saturday 16th Oct, 9pm-10pm

Shaggy has a show devoted to an all-female reggae playlist for tonight’s episode 3. Standby for tunes from Millie Small, Phyllis Dillon, Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths, Janet Kay, Dawn Penn and Koffee.

The Craig Charles House Party – Saturday 16th Oct, 10pm-midnight

Craig Charles continues the celebration and features an Aretha Franklin Mixtape to round off National Album Day and celebrate Black History Month. It's not just a greatest hits compilation though - Craig's thrown in a few lesser-heard gems and album tracks too!

Ana Matronic – Sunday 17th Oct, 12am-2am

Ana Matronic celebrates women in music for National Album Day with an all-female playlist. Featuring music by Moloko, Sugababes, Texas and Chaka Khan. Plus, she curates a mix devoted to Robyn.

BBC Radio 6 Music will be celebrating National Album Day by getting behind the theme of Celebrating Women In Music.

Chris Hawkins – Thursday 14th Oct, 1pm-4pm

Chris Hawkins will be speaking to Tori Amos and throwing forward to National Album Day on 6 Music’s afternoon show.

Radcliffe & Maconie – Saturday 16th Oct, 8am-10am

Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie continue their new-look breakfast show for weekend mornings. Today they are joined by singer, songwriter and musician Rebecca Lucy Taylor AKA Self Esteem. Rebecca joins Mark and Stuart to share her 'First, Last and Everything’ - that’s the first record she owned, the most recent one she’s enjoyed and the record that means ‘everything’ to her. She also chats about her forthcoming second album ‘Prioritise Pleasure.’

Amy Lamé will be spotlighting a female artist on her woman-focused feature Sunday Girl.

BBC Introducing on Radio 1 - Sunday 10th Oct, 11pm-midnight

Gemma Bradley is celebrating Women in Music, this year's National Album Day theme. Talking through some of her favourite artist's albums in the past like Amy Winehouse and Corinne Bailey Rae, and highlighting some incredible upcoming albums from musicians like Self Esteem and Joy Crookes. The playlist this week is also 100% women, all taken from the Introducing uploader.

Benji B will be picking tracks from his favourite albums by women.

Dipps will be celebrating Women In Bhangra! This week Dipps is in conversation with vocalist Kanika Kapoor about her latest track Jhanjar. Dipps presents a very special SOS Bhangra Mix ahead of National Album Day, the theme is Ladies Anthems and Dipps has collaborated with Radio 1's Adele Roberts to bring you 30 minutes of iconic female vocals celebrating women in music.

Bobby Friction – Tuesday 12th Oct, 6pm-8pm

In the week building up to National Album Day, Bobby spotlights the M.I.A. album Kala. Kala is the second studio album by the iconic British Asian hip hop artist. Bobby will play music from the album and will replay his earlier conversations with the celebrated artist.

Weekend Breakfast with Jasmine Takhar – Saturday 16th Oct, 7am-10am

To celebrate National Album Day, Jasmine plays out tracks from three of her favourite albums of all time - Bollywood soundtrack K3G, bhangra game-changing album Repazent by Specialist & Tru Skool and Jasmine Sandlas' album What's In A Name?. As well as all that, Jasmine will also have a brand new Weekend Anthem, and she'll also be giving her take on last week's TV.

Radio Ulster & Foyle will be celebrating this year’s National Album Day across their programming, socials and online, on the day and throughout the week leading up to the event.

The Mark Patterson Show – Weekdays 1:30pm-3pm

Mark will be celebrating National Album Day all week by chatting to a different woman every day about their favourite album and playing three tracks from the album. He will be speaking to Kath Rowlandson, Cathy Taylor, Professor Siobhan O’Neill, Goretti Horgan, and Abby Oliveira.

The Stephen McCauley Show – Monday 11th Oct + all week, 7:30pm-9:30pm
